If you’re doing a home remodel, you want the team you’re working with to be trustworthy, right?
They’re the team who are going to take your plans from ideas to reality. You expect them to have the expertise you don’t to make sure your home looks great when it’s done. No one wants a cowboy team.
So, it’s important you do the work before finding a remodeling contractor you can rely on. It may take some time, but it will be well worth it when your home is finished without a hitch.
Take a look at our tips for hiring a contractor you can trust.
Ask Friends and Family
If you’re looking for home remodeling contractors, why not ask friends and family first? If you know someone who has recently had work done, they might be able to recommend someone you can trust.
Be sure to ask them about price, reliability, and whether they got on with them. Ask if you can see the work they’ve done too. From this, you’ll be able to gauge whether you want them on your side or not. On the other hand, if they had a terrible contractor, you’ll know who to avoid.
Whilst this is a great place to start, don’t rely completely on referrals. Make sure to do some of your own research before going ahead with your choice.
Always Check Reviews
Never hire renovation contractors without checking reviews first.
Reviews are a great way to see real people’s opinions about the workers and get an idea of what you can expect. If they have any bad points, like running consistently late, being a bit rude, or just doing a terrible job, reviews will let you know!
Like with any of our points, don’t rely on this alone. Whilst reviews are great, they can be faked by the renovation contractors or exaggerated by past customers. Use them as a guidance point, but not as the be-all and end-all in your decision making.
For reviews, we recommend doing a quick search of the contractor’s company name into Google and checking them out on social media. If they have a Facebook page, you can often see reviews there too. Some companies will have reviews on their website, making it easy to find customer feedback.
Ask for Past Photos
If you want to make sure your home renovation contractors can carry out the sort of work you have in mind, ask for photos of past work. They should be able to come up with a few that are useful, even if they’re not exactly the same as what you’re doing.
For example, if you want a Victorian style home, you can see if they have any experience in this and any photos of past work in this niche. If they don’t, don’t panic! Just ask for broader pictures of their kitchen remodels or wallpaper work to get an idea of their quality standards.
Get Multiple Quotes
Never just get one quote and go with your first option. If you do that, you’ll never know if you could’ve found better!
If you’re not a home construction contractor and have never had work like this done before, chances are you don’t have a good idea of pricing. You may have seen a rough amount from a quick Google search, but this can vary based on what work you want to be done.
You should always get at least 3 quotes from different contractors before you chose one. Even if you think you’ve found a great company, there could be someone offering a similar service for much cheaper.
In your quotes, make sure you’ve laid out a detailed plan of what you want. You should also for a written proposal from your contractor detailing their plans and make sure you always have their quote confirmed in writing. If there refuse to give a written quote, back out immediately.
Communicate With Them
Before you hire your team, make sure you’ve had a chance to get to know them. You’ll be working with them on a stressful project, so making sure your personalities click is pretty important!
You don’t have to talk to them face to face to get an idea of this. Over the phone and through messages is fine. But meeting your contractors can be a good opportunity to get to know each other and talk over your project properly.
When messaging your contractor, be sure to monitor how quickly they reply. If it takes them too long to get back to you every time, chances are they’re not going to be as reliable. If you’ve got a big question about a building problem, do you want to spend 2 days waiting for an answer?
Sign a Detailed Contract
Once you’ve found the right contractor for your home renovations, make sure you sign a detailed contract. This should lay out everything they’re going to do for you. It should include every aspect of your build, from who’s sourcing the materials for what and deadlines for work.
Read over the contract carefully and make sure you understand everything before you sign. If there’s even one sentence you don’t understand, have the company explains what it means to you or get advice from someone you know.
Do You Need Permits?
In your contract, always detail who’s going to sort out the permits. For most renovations, you’ll need this to start work, so they’re incredibly important!
If you have to do them yourself, you should be wary of the company. Professional contractors will always sort out the permits themselves. If your contractors suggest doing the work without permits, don’t sign a thing.
